Designing global sustainability strategies and implementing change for forward thinking organisations.

Case Studies

From advising leaders to identifying ESG risks and opportunities, Equilibrium Futures works with a diverse range of organisations who share our purpose of building an economy in balance with nature.

With Jersey Finance, we are
developing a Sustainable
Finance Strategy for the finance
sector of one of the world’s
leading International Finance
Centres. The strategy will aim to
keep Jersey at the cutting edge
of innovative and sustainable

The rapid increase of financial flows into ESG rated
funds in recent years is transforming perceptions of this
sector, from nice to have to must have. Building the
necessary understanding, skill sets, tools, data, metrics
and fiscal policies will make the difference between
attracting these new opportunities or being left behind.

Task Force
on Nature

Through our Founder,
Equilibrium Futures has led the
development of a Taskforce on
Nature-related Financial
Disclosure in a collaboration
with the UN, Global Canopy and
the WWF.

In 2021 it will begin designing a disclosure and reporting
framework that will steer finance towards outcomes that
are nature-positive and away from being nature-
negative, in alignment with the UNFCCC Paris
Agreement, the CBD Post-2020 Global Biodiversity
Targets and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
70+ financial institutions, regulators and governments
are engaged in the task.

Mirova Natural Capital

Equilibrium Futures founder
Andrew Mitchell acts as a
consultant for Mirova Natural
Capital, a leading impact asset
manager owned by Natixis and
has been advising on
the development of a series of
US$100-200M funds.

The Althelia Climate Fund deploys capital at the
forefront of rainforest conservation creating protected
areas, sustainable commodities and good livlihoods for
communities in the tropics.

The Sustainable Ocean Fund finances actions on the
ground in sustainable marine aquaculture and the
removal of plastics from the oceans. The projects have
also helped to remove millions of tonnes of CO2 from
the atmosphere which are sold as traceable carbon credits.

How do you design a Billion
dollar landscape bond?
Institutional investors and
Governments wanted to
collaborate to design large scale
landscape investments for
capital markets.

Andrew Mitchell brought together the Indonesian
Government, ADM Capital and BNP Paribas to create
the Indonesian Tropical Landscape Finance Facility, the
first initiative to scope such investments at the US$
billion scale.

Can food value chains that
impact nature, change
shareholder value? Andrew
Mitchell was the originator of
the Forest Footprint Disclosure
project, that now engages 800
major companies worldwide to
disclose their use of ‘forest risk
commodities’ such as beef, soy,
wood products and palm oil.

Later he merged this project with CDP to create CDP
Forests. Over 360 investors with AUM of US$22 trillion
now support this global disclosure request.

“I have great hopes that the
Task Force on Nature-related
Financial Disclosure will ensure
the risks of misusing nature will
be identified, and so avoided.”

on the Economics of Biodiversity,

How do you benchmark investor
and corporate performance in
sustainable finance? Equilibrium
Futures advised Global Canopy
on creating Forest 500, the
world’s first index to rank public
policies among 500 of the
biggest corporate and investor
players in the deforestation

Dubbed the world’s first ‘rainforest ratings agency’,
Forest 500 is now used to assess policy leaders and
laggards worldwide.

What business sectors are most
at risk from the loss of natural
capital? Equilibrium Futures
is advising on the development of
ENCORE, the world’s first tool
to Explore Natural Capital
Opportunity, Risk and Exposure
for the financial sector.

A collaboration between the World Conservation
Monitoring Centre, UNEP FI, and Global Canopy, this
tool enables portfolios to be screened for dependency
and impacts on eight natural assets, delivering 21
ecosystem services that underpin 156 business sectors.

Rainforests Project

How do you make forests
worth more alive than dead?
Andrew Mitchell was the inspiration
behind HRH The Prince of Wales’ Rainforests Project that took up
this challenge. He worked closely
with Prince Charles and subsequently his
International Sustainability Unit.

Governments later committed US$4.5 billion
to help save rainforests, at the time the largest
conservation investment pledge ever made.

What could motivate shoppers
worldwide to change to more
sustainable buying habits?
Equilibrium Futures brought
together a philanthropist and a
major NGO to create ‘Rang-tan’,
an animated ad that was banned
from TV, and then went viral
across the world.

Calling for palm oil production to be decoupled from
deforestation, it achieved over 80 million views and
millions signed up to a Greenpeace petition on ethical
production within the palm oil industry.
